Lagere straf voor Zuid-Koreaanse oud-premier Han

SEOUL (ANP/AFP) Een Zuid-Koreaans hof van beroep heeft donderdag de straf van voormalig premier Han Duck-soo (midden, archief) met acht jaar verminderd. De 76-jarige werd veroordeeld voor zijn rol in de afkondiging van de staat van beleg door ex-president Yoon Suk-yeol. Han werd in januari veroordeeld tot een hoger dan verwachte gevangenisstraf van 23 jaar. Dat is nu teruggebracht naar vijftien jaar. De rechtbank handhaafde het grootste deel van de veroordelingen van Han, maar verlaagde de straf vanwege zijn staat van dienst als politicus, en omdat er geen bewijs is gevonden dat Han actief aan de opstand heeft deelgenomen, bijvoorbeeld door daar voorbereidingen voor te hebben getroffen. Yoon kondigde in december 2024 de noodtoestand af om het parlement, waar de oppositie de meerderheid had, buitenspel te zetten. Hij kreeg daar levenslang voor.
