Simons mist WK door zware blessure

LONDEN (ANP) Xavi Simons (foto, rechts) mist het WK voetbal door een zware knieblessure. Zijn club Tottenham Hotspur bevestigt dat de Oranje-international zaterdag in het competitieduel met Wolverhampton Wanderers zijn voorste kruisband in zijn rechterknie heeft gescheurd. Simons raakte na een uur spelen geblesseerd in een duel met Hugo Bueno. De 23-jarige middenvelder werd aan de rand van het veld behandeld en probeerde nog verder te spelen, maar moest kort daarna alsnog per brancard van het veld. Onderzoek wees uit dat hij mogelijk tot twaalf maanden is uitgeschakeld. "Mijn seizoen is abrupt voorbij en ik probeer dit te verwerken", schrijft Simons op Instagram. "Eerlijk gezegd ben ik er kapot van." Ook noemt hij het missen van het WK "hartverscheurend".
