President Ecuador roept nieuwe noodtoestand uit

QUITO (ANP/RTR) De Ecuadoraanse president Daniel Noboa heeft vanwege het dodelijke geweld in zijn land een nieuwe noodtoestand uitgeroepen in zeven van de 24 provincies. De maatregel zal zestig dagen van kracht zijn, blijkt uit een presidentieel decreet. Het is al de derde keer dat de pas in november aangetreden Noboa een dergelijke maatregel afkondigt. De Ecuadoraanse regering wijt het geweld in het land aan rivaliserende drugsbendes. In januari bestempelde Noboa 22 bendes als terroristische groeperingen. De afgelopen maanden werd het land onder meer opgeschrikt door een gewapende inval tijdens een televisie-uitzending en een massale gijzeling van gevangenisbewakers.
