MOSKOU (ANP/RTR) De Amerikaanse zakenman Michael Calvey is donderdag in Rusland schuldig bevonden aan verduistering. Calvey is een van de grootste particuliere investeerders in Rusland en werd begin 2019 gearresteerd wegens beschuldigingen rond een deal met een leenbank, de Vostotsjni (Oriëntaalse) Bank. Het lot van Calvey wordt ook met belangstelling gevolgd door andere investeerders die in Rusland actief zijn of willen worden. De 53-jarige Calvey zat enige tijd in een huis van bewaring, maar werd vervolgens onder huisarrest geplaatst. Dat is inmiddels ook opgeheven. De aanklagers hebben een voorwaardelijke celstraf geëist. De rechters moeten zich nog over een straf uitspreken. Er zou 34 miljoen euro zijn verdwenen. Calvey bestrijdt de beschuldigingen fel en ontkent iets verkeerds te hebben gedaan. Calvey is oprichter van het investeringsfonds Baring Vostok.
