Paus Franciscus onderweg naar Irak voor eerste bezoek

VATICAANSTAD (ANP/AFP/RTR) Paus Franciscus is vanochtend vanuit Rome vertrokken naar Irak. Het is het eerste bezoek ooit van een paus aan het land en de eerste buitenlandse trip voor Franciscus tijdens de coronapandemie. Hij keert maandag weer terug. De 84-jarige paus staat een druk programma te wachten in Irak. Hij gaat langs bij christelijke gemeenschappen om de leden te steunen. Ook staat er een ontmoeting met de sjiitische ayatollah Ali Sistani op het programma. Irak zet veel soldaten in om de veiligheid van de paus te waarborgen tijdens het bezoek.
